Best Hiking Trails in Ontario for Families

Being outdoorsy and enjoying nature is something we innately want to share with our children, but hiking with children, especially in the beginning, can seem like a daunting activity. Stop feeling overwhelmed and get back to nature. RecProtect has taken the planning out of your next family hike in Ontario for you:

Algonquin Provincial Park

Location:
Whitney, ON

Length of Trails:
Barron Canyon Trail [1.5km]
Beaver Pond Trail [2km]
Track and Tower Trail [7.9km]

Barron Canyon Trail is a loop that guides you along the north rim of the Barron Canyon while offering outstanding views! Beaver Pond Trail provides you more diverse terrain through the hardwood forest with opportunities to spot beavers and admire their hard work of gnawed trees and dams. Lastly, the Track and Tower Trail is considered a moderately challenging and lengthy route for families looking for more of a “true hiking” experience.

Crawford Lake Conservation

Location:
Milton, ON

Length of Trails:
Boardwalk [0.75km]
Woodland Trail [1.5km]

Begin your hike on a stroller-friendly boardwalk around Crawford Lake to experience water life and vegetation. If you are travelling without a stroller, you can extend this journey through the Woodland Trail that circles back to the 15th-century Iroquoian village, complete with three longhouses.

Hilton Falls Trail

Location:
Milton, ON

Length of Trails:
4km

This there-and-back trail offers a “pot of gold” at the end with its 10-metre waterfall! The base of the waterfall is a great picnic spot and exploration starting point to see behind the falls and or just to frolic in the water at its base. There’s also a detour opportunity to observe the reservoir.

Mono Cliffs Provincial Park

Location:
Mono, ON

Length of Trails:
Cliff-Top Side Trail [2.8km]
Spillway Trail [1.3km]

While these two paths are excellent for families to explore, there are a variety of trails at this park that connect to one another, offering very different hiking experiences too, with difficulty levels and terrain. From moderate to easy, forest to open fields, and sandy paths to rocky trails or even wooden boardwalks, Mono Cliffs offers a great day of adventure for the entire family.

Mount Nemo Conservation Area

Location:
Burlington, ON

Length of Trail:
Mount Nemo Loop [5.3km – can be broken into North and/or South]

Let the curvy trails of Mount Nemo guide you to incredible views of the Greater Toronto Area while also connecting you with nature. You can witness everything from caves, circling vultures, and rock climbing to views of the CN Tower, all in this one unique location.

Niagara Glen

Location:
Niagara Falls, ON

Length of Trail: 4km

Escape the tourist vibes of Niagara at Niagara Glen and enter the Carolinian Forest. Travel down a metal spiral staircase to the breathtaking terrain of the glen and boulders that extends right next to the Niagara River, gorge and whirlpools. While the hike is short, children will easily love exploring the boulders and small caves all afternoon.
