Best Hiking Trails in British Columbia for Families

Enjoying nature is something we innately want to share with our children, but hiking with children can seem daunting at first. Stop feeling overwhelmed and get back to nature. RecProtect has taken the planning out of your next family hike in British Columbia for you:

Capilano Regional Park

Location:
Vancouver, BC

Length of Trails:
2.6km

If surrounding yourself with views of rushing water and rainforest vibes interests you, don’t skip this trail. Capilano Regional Park, also known as Capilano Canyon, houses one of four canyons in the Vancouver area. Along your way you’ll encounter the Capilano Salmon Hatchery and Cleveland Dam, that children will want to explore. You’ll be guided through sections of a scenic forest, over bridges and presented with lookout points of the river below.

Lighthouse Park

Location:
West Vancouver, BC

Length of Trails:
Up to 6km

Escape the city with this taste of the wilderness. The park offers a network of easy trails that allow your family flexibility to make your journey as short or long as you wish. Along the various routes you can observe, explore and witness scenic views of: Howe Sound and Burrard Inlet, the Lighthouse, Starboat Cove and beach area, Lions Gate Bridge, and even the University of British Columbia on clear days.

Rice Lake

Location:
North Vancouver, BC

Length of Trails:
3km

Located within Lynn Headwater Regional Park, the Rice Lake trail is exactly how it sounds, a trail that loops the entirety of this body of water. The trail itself offers several views of the lake and areas where children can explore, but that isn’t even the best part of this location. Rice Lake is home to stocked Rainbow Trout and a large docking area, making it also a great location for fishing with the family!

Spirit Trail

Location:
Harrison Hot Springs, BC

Length of Trails:
1km

Although seemingly short, still plan to spend some time at Spirit Trial. This is because a Harrison local, Earnie Eaves, has taken to this cedar forest to make it much more whimsical for your family adventure. Hand crafted clay masks hang amongst the trees, creating new creatures to discover along your journey. Children will find joy in locating, discussing and potentially even crafting stories about these magical faces in the forest.

Whytecliff Park

Location:
West Vancouver, BC

Length of Trail:
2km

Whether you are looking to hike or a relaxing day in nature, Whytecliff Park should be your go-to spot. The hike itself is not over difficult or rough terrain, making it a great choice for children. This large rocky outcrop will provide your family with incredible scenic views. The other choice this park offers is its rocky beach area, great for picnicking and promoting exploration in nature. This lustrous water is great for swimming or even scuba diving, and allows you to complete your day with a breathtaking sunset.
